a brightly painted white fence, a garden folly and a sturdy pair of wellies tell the tale of my first visit to colonial williams in my teens. the gardens there were so elegant and seemed to defy nature itself with their tidy rows and clipped boxwood. they also served a dual purpose, both pretty and practical.

i've also long admired the antique tools used to tend the gardens- the worn patina of wood and metal used by generations of gardeners. a simple pair of snips suddenly seem almost architectural in nature.
